Proposed Council Amalgamation Update

On Thursday, 12 May 2016, the NSW Government proclaimed the former areas of Hurstville and Kogarah Councils as Georges River Council. Council is known as Georges River Council.

The following appointments have been made:
Administrator
– John Rayner
Interim General Manager – Gail Connolly
Deputy General Managers – Laurie O’Connor and Paul Woods

The proclamation specifies that the new council is to have 15 councillors and be comprised of five wards.

Georges River Council includes the following wards:

  1. Peakhurst Ward
  2. Mortdale Ward
  3. Blakehurst Ward
  4. Hurstville Ward
  5. Kogarah Bay Ward

The next council elections are now scheduled to be held on 9 September 2017.

Residents can rest assured that the impact of this proposed Council merger does not affect the day-to-day operations of Hurstville City Council and it remains ‘business as usual’.

PUBLIC ENQUIRY

Recently, pursuant to section 218F of the Local Government Act 1993, it was announced that a public inquiry will be held in relation to the proposal to amalgamate or alter the boundaries of Hurstville, Kogarah and Rockdale local government areas.

Make a submission

The examination into the proposal has now commenced and submissions are invited from members of the public. The closing date for submissions is 5:00pm EST, Sunday, 26 June 2016.

Attending the Public Inquiry

A public inquiry in relation to the proposal will be held under section 263 of the Local Government Act 1993 at the following times and venues:

- Club Central Hurstville: Wednesday, 15 June 2016, 1:00pm to 5:00pm
- Venus Reception Centre Kogarah: Wednesday, 15 June 2016, 7:00pm to 10:00pm

Members of the public who would like to attend are requested to register at www.councilboundaryreview.nsw.gov.au or by contacting 1300 813 020.

Members of the public who would like to speak at the public inquiry are requested to indicate that they wish to do so when they register to attend.
