Ossie Byrne in uniform, 1943. In January 1945, he was transferred to RAAF 334 Radar Stn in New Britain. He lost an eye in February 1945. It is believed his injuries were caused by shrapnel from Japanese shelling of the Cape Gloucester airstrip on 5 February. He was hospitalised for several months. |
