Abandoned Vehicles

Abandoned vehicles are those left discarded and unregistered on state and council-owned roads or property.

Following investigation of a discarded or unregistered vehicle, Hurstville City Council is authorised to impound the vehicle and on some occasions fine the owner. If the  vehicle is worth less than $500, Council is authorised to destroy it and if it is worth more than $500, Council may sell it.

To check if a vehicle you think is abandoned is unregistered, examine the current registration label to see if the number plate on the label matches the number plate on the vehicle:

  • if the vehicle is registered but damaged or dangerous, you should contact NSW Police. You should also contact NSW Police if the vehicle is registered, so they can check if the vehicle is stolen and contact the owner
  • if registration labels are not displayed, or are out of date, please contact Council's Customer Service Centre  for further investigation
Abandoned trolleys

Council has no authority over abandoned shopping trolleys. To report an abandoned trolley, please telephone Trolley Trackers on 1800 641 497.
