St George 'Short Stuff' Youth Film Festival - National Youth Week

March - May 2015

On Friday 8th of May Greater Union Cinema Hurstville played host to the screening and awards ceremony for the 2015 St George ‘Short Stuff’ Youth Film Festival. $3000 worth of cash prizes were on offer and the cinema was abuzz in anticipation for who would take out the awards.

Over the weekend of Friday 17th – Sunday 19th April participants were given 48 hours to shoot, edit and submit their film. Twelve teams submitted films, all of which were screened at the awards ceremony. There was an array of genres and styles on offer, with some films tackling more serious youth issues and others leaving the audience rolling with laughter in the aisles

Barton Williams is an actor, writer and producer who facilitated some skills development workshops earlier in the festival. Along with Kathryn Yuen (from ABC television’s Maximum Choppage) and festival patron Debbie Lee (Matchbox Pictures) Barton was a judge for the festival. On the evening he spoke about how much he enjoyed the films and how impressed he was that each film conveyed character development and tangible plot- solid bases for a strong film.

Following the screening of films, MC’s (and Kogarah Youth Advisory Committee members) Humaira Nasrin and Soaliha Iqbal read out the winners for each category. Awards were presented by Mayor of the City of Kogarah, Councillor Michael Platt, Hurstville City Councillor Christina Wu and CEO of Shopfront Youth Arts, Daniel Potter. Winner of the coveted Best Film Award went to the crew from Mission Implausible- a sleek and funny spy-film spoof! See below for a full list of this year’s winners.

Hurstville City Council would like to thank Kogarah City Council, Shopfront Youth Arts and Greater Union Cinema Hurstville. Without the support of these partners the festival would not have been possible.
