Waste & Recycling
Hurstville City Council's introduction of the three bin system (red lid for rubbish, yellow lid for recycling and green lid for green waste) in July 2000, has enabled Hurstville City residents to reduce the amount of material they send to landfill by almost 50 per cent.
While this is a great result, only 30 percent of what we throw away should actually be going to landfill and the rest can be reused or recycled in other ways. Did you know that more than half of the rubbish in the red lidded bin can be recycled by composting or worm farming, and a further 13 per cent can be recycled in the yellow lidded recycling bin?
Council runs many initiatives to assist residents in minimising their waste, recycling more and disposing of problem materials responsibly. We host free regular workshops and courses to help you live more sustainably and also produce an environmental newsletter called Greening Hurstville which you can subscribe to receive via email which helps save water, energy and paper resources.
