12 Sep 2012
Mayor of Hurstville, Cr Steve McMahon is inviting the community to come along to the Italian Open Day on Sunday 23 September 2012, from 2.00pm to 5.00pm at the Hurstville Museum & Gallery.
Mayor McMahon said that the open day was part of the activities associated with the exhibition Sydney’s Italian Fruit Shop – The Original Green Grocer.
“It should be a fun day and an opportunity to celebrate the rich Italian culture with coffee, sweets and entertainment,” he said.
“There will be live folk music, face painting for the children and games of bocce being played.
“And you can enjoy coffee and Italian sweets, which will be for sale outside the museum.”
Mayor McMahon added there will be a guided tour of the exhibition at 3.30pm.
“The exhibition was created by Co.As.It (Italian Association of Assistance) in collaboration with the Australian Centre for Public History at the University of Technology Sydney,” he said.
“Over 40 oral histories were recorded to capture the stories of the Italian fruiterer families.
“The exhibition also showcases colourful photographic panels presenting themes like Chain Migration, Doing the Markets, Proud Exteriors and Interiors and Never Too Young.”
The exhibition closes on Sunday 30 September 2012.
