Hurstville’s junior golfers: 2009 Encourage Shield State Champions

29 Jan 2010

Mayor Sansom said the team of eight local golfers from 13 to 15 years of age qualified for the Encourage Shield State Championships after placing second in a field of 60 Sydney golf clubs in the Sydney Metropolitan Encourage Shield late last year.

“In 2009, the team delivered the best results in its four year history, defeating top clubs including St Michaels, Bonnie Doon, Cronulla, and Riverlands-Bankstown,” he said.

“After being beaten only by Dunheved Golf Club, the boys qualified for the state level competition, which is sponsored by the Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation.”

Mayor Sansom said the Hurstville juniors travelled to Newcastle Golf Club to compete against clubs from NSW and the ACT in the Encourage Shield State Championships from 18-19 January 2010.

“The boys played a challenging game against Toukley Golf Club, resulting in a sudden death play off, which the Hurstville team finally won to achieve a place in the state finals,” he said.

“In an interesting twist, the team was up against Dunheved Golf Club in the finals, but this time won the game 3.5 to 2.5 to become 2009 Encourage Shield State Champions.”

Mayor Sansom said Hurstville City Council supports Hurstville Golf Club’s Junior Opportunity Programme by waiving green fees for players in inter-club competitions.

“This is the team’s first major title and it’s a great credit to the boys as well as team manager Martin Johnson, BlueFit pros from Hurstville Golf Club, Daniel Marsh and Stewart Hardiman, parents and grandparents, supporter St George Maso’s and Bruce Hancock, who first established the team,” he said.

“The team has done the club and Hurstville City proud with its continuous effort and skill.

“Congratulations on behalf of Councillors and staff, and I wish you all the best for another successful season in 2010.”
