Open Space & Facilities Strategy

Planning for the Future – where will we play, learn, exercise, meet and gather

Hurstville City Council, after extensive public consultation, have adopted a strategy to identify the types of open space, recreation, community and library facilities that will be required to serve the needs and aspirations of residents over the next 20 years.

Population projections indicate that the community of Hurstville City will continue to grow and change. To meet these growing and changing needs and to support the development of vibrant communities, Council is taking a proactive step to identify what type of open space, recreation, community and library facilities will be required in the future.

The new strategy guides Council in the development of its Community Strategic Plan, Comprehensive Local Environmental Plan, Hurstville City Centre LEP & DCP and Development Contributions Plans, by identifying the demands that will arise as the urban density of our City increases.  To ensure that we are able to build sustainable communities and meet social needs; parks, playing fields, leisure centres, community centres, community halls, neighbourhood centres, child care centres, early childhood health clinics, senior’s centres, entertainment centre, theatre and libraries are all required.

The Strategy includes:

  • principles to guide the planning for future open spaces, recreation, community and library facilities
  • the types of facilities and spaces which will be needed in the future
  • where new facilities and spaces would be best located
  • how facilities could be provided
  • Council’s future role

The strategy informs the Council’s Community Strategic Plan, Comprehensive Local Environmental Plan, Hurstville City Centre LEP & DCP and Developer Contributions Plans.

The development of the Strategy has and will continue to involve analysis of existing spaces and facilities, and consultation with community, sporting organisations, service providers, user groups and community members. The Strategy also considers population projections, predicted patterns of urban growth and leading practice in the provision of facilities.
