Multicultural Programs
Hurstville City Council has developed a number of community programs to engage residents from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in community life. These include:
Language Aide Program
Council provides language assistance to residents from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds when required. Currently, Council has eight Language Aide Officers who speak Mandarin, Cantonese, Arabic, Greek, Italian and Macedonian and can assist residents by phone or in Council's Customer Service Centre.
Cultural Awareness Program
Council provides training for staff in understanding cultural diversity, so that they can improve their communication with residents from diverse cultures.
Multicultural Advisory Committee
Programs for residents from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are developed by Council's Multicultural Advisory Committee. The Committee includes representatives from Hurstville's culturally and linguistically diverse communities, Councillors, Council staff and representatives from government and non-government organisations.
It has developed a Multicultural Access Action Plan to improve community participation and access to Council services. The Plan contains a set of priorities and practical actions, which are reviewed annually.
The committee meets bi-monthly on the first Tuesday of each month.
