Review and Update of Hurstville Heritage Study 1988
Hurstville Council along with a heritage consultant are currently undertaking a review and update of Hurstville Heritage Study 1988. The project is jointly funded by the Council and the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage under the NSW Heritage Grants Program 2011-2013.
Background
The current Hurstville Heritage Study 1988 (on which the current heritage schedule in Hurstville LEP 1994 is based) was undertaken in 1988-89 and is in need of a comprehensive review. The original study formed a database for the local area, and created a foundation document for future decisions affecting local heritage. It also recommended which of the assessed items were suitable for listing in the Heritage Schedule of the current Hurstville LEP1994.
The objectives of the review and update of Hurstville Heritage Study 1988 are to:
- review and update the Hurstville Heritage Study 1988, on which the heritage schedule in the HLEP 1994 (and draft HLEP 2011) is based, to ensure that the Heritage List reflects the cultural (European and Aboriginal) and natural heritage of Hurstville;
- investigate the significance of suggested new heritage items (e.g. Oatley Park and Baths);
- identify any new heritage items since the Hurstville Heritage Study 1988 was undertaken;
- undertake community consultation; and
- ensure that Council’s heritage controls reflect best practice in heritage management.
Heritage Study Working Group
In accordance with the Heritage Guidelines formulated by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, a Heritage Study Working Group (HSWG) has been established. The HSWG comprises representatives from the local community, National Trust of Australia (NSW), Oatley Heritage Group, Aboriginal community groups and Council staff.
The HSWG works in conjunction with Council’s heritage consultant and Council staff and will be expected to:
- Identify and review potential local heritage items (including suggested new items since the Hurstville Heritage Study 1988);
- Participate in community consultation with regard to potential local heritage items in Hurstville LGA; and
- Contribute advice, ideas and suggestions for the project including presentation of results and preparation of heritage management strategies.
Nominating potential local heritage items
Council is inviting community members to nominate potential local heritage items and/or provide additional information on existing items.
A Heritage Item Nomination Form needs to be filled for this purpose and is available on this webpage.
Applications for nomination of potential local heritage items and/or provision of additional information on existing items close on 30 March 2012.
