Garden Organics

Hurstville city Council provides all single dwellings (including houses, townhouses, villas and dual occupancies) with a 240 litre green lid bin for recycling your garden organics. This bin is collected fortnightly on the alternate week to the recycling bin.
Multi unit dwellings with large grassy areas may apply for a garden organics collection service. Requests must be made by Strata Managers, Property Agents or Body Corporate representatives in writing to Council. For more information contact Council's Waste Services department on 9330 6222.

Can I order an additional garden organics bin?
Residents of single dwellings that have excess garden organics material that does not fit in their green lid bin can apply for an additional garden organics service from Council. Fess are applicable and applications must be made by the owner of the property on the Domestic Properties application form. I live in a unit block - can I have a garden organics bin?
Unit blocks with large grassy areas may be entitled to a garden organics service. Fees are applicable and applications must be made by Strata Managers. What can I do with large quantities of garden organics material?
Large branches or garden organics that do not fit in your green lid bin can be booked as part of your free On Call Clean Up. Each household is entitled to two (2) free clean ups per calendar year - please follow the Clean Up Guidelines to ensure your materials are collected. To make a booking call the Waste Hotline on 1800 079 390.
Large quantities of garden organics material can also be taken to your nearest waste management facility. Fees do apply for the disposal of garden materials at these facilities - please see the links below for more details.
Where is my nearest waste management facility?
The closest waste management facility to Hurstville City is the Rockdale Resource Recovery Park in Lindsay Street, Rockdale. The Lucas Height Resource Recovery Park on New Illawarra Rd, Lucas Heights is also within 20kms of Hurstville CIty.
Where does the garden waste go after it is collected?
All garden organics materials is taken to the Chullora Resource Recovery Park where it is composted.
Why wasn't my bin emptied?
Your bin may not have been emptied for one of the following reasons:
- Your bin was contaminated
- You put your bin out too late
- The bin was too heavy (maximum weight 70kg)
- The was placed out too close to trees, a light pole or a parked car
- The bin handles were not facing your property
- The bin lid was not closed completely
Usually the bin will be stickered or a card placed in your letterbox explaining why it was not collected. Please contact the Waste Hotline on 1800 079 390 if you have any questions.
