Fridge Buyback
Hurstville City Council encourages residents to help the environment by disposing of old and inefficient fridges. Council celebrated the collection of its 450th fridge in the local government area in April 2010.
Council partners with the NSW Government’s Climate Change Fund on the Fridge Buyback scheme, where inefficient fridges are degassed, the cooling chemicals in them destroyed and their metal parts recycled.
Fridge Buyback is an energy efficiency program that actually pays you to reduce your electricity bill and help save the environment. Old fridges are big energy users, consuming up to three times the energy of new fridges. Running your second fridge adds an average of $190 a year to your electricity bill and injects one tonne of greenhouse gas into the environment.
Hurstville City residents can participate if:
- you have a working second fridge in regular use
- it is at least 10 years old
- its internal volume is 250 litres or greater (8.83 cubic feet).
Experienced removalists will collect your fridge free-of-charge from your home, if removal involves 20 stairs or less. Fridge Buyback will also pay you a $35 rebate if removal involves six stairs or less. If removal involves 21 or more stairs, a fee will apply.
Fridge Buyback has produced a video on the program that shows what happens to your fridge. View the video here.
