Cooks River Sustainability Initiative
Hurstville City Council is one of eight local government partners in the Cooks River Sustainability Initiative, which aims to work with the community to rehabilitate sections of Cooks River.
The initiative is funded by a $2 million NSW Government grant and focuses on the Upper Wolli Creek sub-catchment, encompasses parts of Beverly Hills, Kingsgrove and Bexley North.
Cooks River Sustainability Initiative aims to improve the quality of water flowing into Cooks River by developing relationships between councils and the community which provide long term benefits for the Cooks River.
In 2008, a community water survey was undertaken in the Wolli Creek sub-catchment to identify the attitudes, knowledge and current behaviours of residents in relation to water conservation and use. Community workshops were also conducted to build a community vision for sustainable water management. Council and the OurRiver team have developed a Subcatchment Management Plan that was based on the community survey and visioning sessions. This document details the actions Council can take to improve water quality in the Cooks River through education, staff development and infrastructure works.
