If you have been a permanent resident of Australia for two or more years, you may be eligible to apply for citizenship, provided you meet a number of requirements. Hurstville City Council hosts regular Citizenship Ceremonies for people living in the Hurstville local government area.
To become an Australian citizen, you must submit an application and pay a fee to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). Once the application and fee have been submitted, you will be invited by the Department to attend a short interview where your application will be assessed.
On approval of the citizenship application, Hurstville City residents are invited to attend a Citizenship Ceremony conducted by Hurstville City Council.
Presentation of your citizenship certificate at the ceremony is the final step to becoming an Australian Citizen. You cannot receive your citizenship certificate unless you attend the ceremony. Council’s Citizenship Ceremonies are usually presided over by the Mayor.
You will also complete an electoral form at the ceremony, so that your name can be added to the Australian electoral roll and you can vote.
If you are unable to attend your allocated ceremony, you will be placed on a waiting list to attend a future ceremony.
PLEASE NOTE: the Department assigns your Citizenship Ceremony date - not Council. People with special circumstances who require their citizenship to be fast-tracked should state their case to the Department.
Citizenship for children
Children under 16 years of age do not need to be present at the ceremony to receive their citizenship. If you are your child’s nominated parent, your certificate will be presented along with your child’s certificate at the ceremony. Council will not post out a separate invitation to the ceremony for children under 16 years of age - the nominated parent will receive the invitation.
